Delectable Michigan-Made Foods & Drinks

Each state has the food and drinks they are known for. Michigan is no different. There are a lot of well-known Michigan-made foods and drinks that natives enjoy and love to share!

Michigan-Made Drinks

Michiganders are very proud of their pop! Don’t even try to call it soda because we will get mad about it.

Faygo

Faygo was created by Ben and Perry Feigenson in 1907. The two brothers originally started bottling beer, mineral water and soda water. As bakers, they decided to experiment with combining their frosting flavoring with soda water and the Faygo we all know, and love was born. Originally, they only offered fruit punch, grape and strawberry flavors, but have since expanded to offering over 30 flavors.

Vernors

A list of Michigan-made foods and drinks was not going to be complete without Vernors. The ginger ale was created by pharmacists James Vernor in 1866 and has since become a go-to medicine for a stomach ache if you live in Michigan. While Vernors is a hit with Michiganders, it is still difficult to find out of state.

Michigan-Made Food

In Michigan, we take our Detroit-style pizza seriously, but that is only one of the many foods we love.

Better Made

Better Made is best known for its chips, but they do offer a variety of snack options including popcorn, cheese puffs, pretzels, and corn chips. Better Made was founded in 1934, but was making their Best Made potato chips before they officially established their company. They are one of the few potato chip manufacturers to build a lasting brand out of Detroit.

Hudsonville Ice Cream

Hudsonville Creamery was started in Hudsonville, Michigan in 1895 and started making ice cream in 1926. The company has come a long way from the six original flavors they offered. They now offer nearly 50 flavors, some of which are only offered seasonally and also include dairy-free options. The brand did not start expanding past West Michigan until 2008. They started by selling their ice cream in the Detroit area before expanding throughout the Midwest.

Jiffy Mix

Jiffy is baking mixes that are so easy anyone can do it! They are best known for their muffin mixes, with corn muffins being among the most recognizable. When the baking mixes were created, they were only sold to other businesses, but now they are available on the shelves of stores in all 50 states and other countries as well. The Jiffy brand is owned by Chelsea Milling Company.

Kellogg’s

Kellogg’s is likely the most notable brand on this list. They have been serving up breakfast in homes since they accidentally created Corn Flakes at their Battle Creek plant. They slowly created more cereals including favorites such as Apple Jacks, Frosted Flakes, Frosted Mini-Wheats, Raisin Bran, and Rice Krispies to name a few. Their products are available in over 180 countries and they even hold a Royal Warrant allowing them to advertise that they provide their goods to the royal family.
