10 Things Incoming Students Should Know Before Arriving at U of M

The University of Michigan is one of the top 25 universities in the world. With alumni including Darren Criss from Glee, Larry Page who co-founded Google, and Adam Herz who is the screenwriter and producer of American Pie, U of M is a well-known university. If you are spending your next four years in the city of Ann Arbor full of nature and a variety of students, then here is 10 things you’ll want to know.

1. Join a sorority or a fraternity.

U of M is a school that takes pride in their Greek life. Even if you don’t plan on joining a sorority or a fraternity, you can at least rush to meet new people! It is recommended to do this during your freshman or sophomore year.

2. Ann Arbor has many nicknames.

Ann Arbor is a home to more than just students, and it has collected a bunch of nicknames. If you hear someone say “A2,” “The Deuce,” or “Ace Deuce,” they are referring to Ann Arbor.

3. Visit State Street and Main Street.

Main Street is located in downtown Ann Arbor and State Street is just east of Main Street. Each street has plenty of restaurants, shops, and galleries. You will want to check out Main Street during Restaurant Week.

4. Get season football tickets.

The University of Michigan is a Big Ten school, so the football games are ones you’ll want to witness in person. Michigan Stadium, or the “Big House” is the largest stadium in the United States, and it is the second largest stadium in the world. Fill up one of the 109,901 seats by buying student football tickets.

5. Eat at Zingerman’s Deli.

Zingerman’s Deli has been loved by many since it started in 1982. This is the place to be if you are craving amazing corned beef, pastrami, and turkey deli sandwiches.

6. Stay on campus during the summer.

Not only will this give you the opportunity to catch up on credits, but it also lets you experience the campus during the warmer months. There is an art fair that goes on in Ann Arbor during the summertime that you will want to stick around to check out.

7. Don’t step on the block M.

It is bad luck to step on the block M located at the Diag, especially before your first exam. People say that if you step on it, you will flunk out. So many people know about this legend that it was even a Jeopardy trivia question.

8. Check out the Nichols Arboretum.

The Nichols Arboretum, or better known as “the Arb,” is green space on campus that is a popular hang out for students. Grab some friends and a blanket and hang out here with your fellow peers.

9. Enjoy a night out at Rick’s.

Some claim that Rick’s is the best college bar in Ann Arbor. This bar is a huge hang out place for current students and alumni.

10. Kiss your soulmate under lovers arch.

This is for all of the college lovebirds at U of M. Lovers arch is U of M’s old engineering arch and the legend is if you kiss someone under the arch at midnight, you will marry that person and be with them for the rest of your life.
