Fun Lakes to Camp on in Michigan

Summer is in full swing and it is time to hit the inland lakes in the Great Lakes state. There is no better way to do it than to find campgrounds with a waterfront view. We are lucky to have several great campgrounds that are situated right on the water on beautiful Michigan lakes. Here are a few that are worth visiting during Michigan’s best season.

Shupac Lake

Shupac Lake is located just north of Grayling. It is a rustic campground, with vault toilet facilities. If you want to enjoy a quiet lake, go to Shupac. This is a first come, first serve campground with 30 sites. This campground is perfect for pop-up campers and tent camping. The lake is ideal for kayaking and canoeing.

Ambrose Lake

Tucked out of the way in Ogemaw County, this lake is a perfect spot with a lot of great outdoor attractions. This is a Michigan DNR Campground and is a first-come, first-serve lake. The scenic Ogemaw Hills Pathway is only 5 1/2 miles away from many hiking and biking opportunities. The campground has 25 spots, for both tents and pop-up campers. Don’t forget to bring along your kayaks and canoes; the lake is perfect for it!

Houghton Lake

The Houghton Lake State Forest Campground is an often forgotten-about destination for those looking to enjoy the more quiet side of Houghton Lake. While Houghton Lake is known for boats and parties, such as the Bud Bash, the lake can be peaceful too. Way over on the north side of the lake is a more quiet spot where campers can enjoy the beauty and fishing of Houghton Lake. A great getaway in the summer and fall, this DNR state forest campground has 50 sites and does have bathroom facilities.

Newaygo State Park

While technically not on a lake, the Newaygo State Park is located on the Hardy Dam Pond, which is an impoundment flooding of the Muskegon River. This State Park has two rustic campgrounds, Poplar and Oak. There are nearly 100 sites between the two. The Hardy Dam Pond offers boating, fishing and sandy beaches for swimming. This is a fun getaway that is also close to Grand Rapids.
