Tree Selection Tips

The staff at the Christmas tree farm you select will be very knowledgeable and can assist you when you’re picking the right tree for your home, but here are a few helpful tips as well.

  • Before leaving home, measure where your tree will be placed. Measure the height AND width so you don’t run into trouble when you return home with your tree. Do not set up your tree in front of a fireplace or furnace vent.
  • Research the different tree species. The tree varieties have different types of branches and needles. It’s important to pick a tree that will hold up your prized ornaments.
  • Test the tree for dryness by running a brand through your enclosed hand. If the needles fall off easily, the tree could be too dry. Additionally, if branches snap easily, the tree is too dry.

Tree Care Tips

Properly taking care of your tree is vital to make sure it lasts until you celebrate. Follow these tips to make sure your tree looks its best throughout the season.

  • Keep your tree watered. With the tree being in a warm home, it can absorb roughly a quart of water a day. If your tree runs out of water, experts recommend making a fresh cut to reopen the closed pores.
  • Check all lights for any faulty wiring to prevent a fire from starting. If possible, use miniature lights, which produce low heat to help prevent the tree from drying out quickly.

Disposing & Recycling Trees

Removing a tree from your home can be messy. Placing a plastic tree bag under the stand of your tree is recommended for easy removal after the holiday season. If needles fall off the tree during removal, consider sweeping them up with a broom as the needles can be bad for vacuums. Once you’ve bagged your tree, here are your options for disposal.

  • Curbside Pickup: Many carriers will pick up trees in the weeks following the holiday. It’s possible they will have size restrictions so be sure to check with your local carrier.
  • Recycling Center: A recycling center near you may offer free drop-off of your tree.
  • Nonprofits: Check with the nonprofit organizations in your area, they may offer tree pickup for a small donation.
