Detroit Drinking Guide

Detroit is home to some of the most unique bars in all of Michigan, ranging from classy speakeasies to the diviest of dive bars. Whether you’re just visiting the area or are a long time resident looking to grab a drink this weekend, here are some of the best bars to visit in Detroit.

Old Miami

3930 Cass Ave, Detroit, MI 48201

Type: Dive bar/music venue
Price Range: $
Perfect For: Veterans and hipsters that like to sip PBR while listening to live music

Known as a Veterans’ bar, Old Miami offers dark divey lighting that washes over the pool table side room, main bar, and stage that features the best local Detroit bands. Along with the eclectic décor and cheap drinks, Old Miami is also home to an outdoor bar, complete with a large patio for hanging out with friends and bonfires for colder summer nights.

The Sugar House

2130 Michigan Ave, Detroit, MI 48216

Type: Upscale craft cocktail bar
Price Range: $$
Perfect For: Special occasions or getting one drink before going to a bar that won’t make you go bankrupt

The Sugar House is a classy establishment that features a speakeasy atmosphere to enjoy while you sip your craft cocktail. The almost overwhelming multipage menu features everything from classics to experimental mixtures that you may not know how to pronounce.

Temple Bar

2906 Cass Ave, Detroit, MI 48201

Type: Dance party dive bar
Price Range: $
Perfect For: A night spent dancing to electronic music while downing cheap but stiff cocktails

Temple Bar, named after its close neighbor The Masonic Temple, hosts the hottest dance party every weekend. Although the exterior may look scruffy and you have to be buzzed in by the bouncer (yes the door is locked at all times), the crowd at Temple Bar usually includes midtown hipsters and local Detroitians that love electronic music, dancing, and cheap drinks.

Detroit City Distillery

2462 Riopelle St, Detroit, MI 48207

Type: Speakeasy style distillery
Price Range: $$
Perfect For: Date night or for alcohol snobs that only drink the premium stuff

Similar to The Sugar House with an emphasis on a prohibition-era theme and cocktails, Detroit City Distillery is a small bar located in Eastern Market. With delicious cocktails, unique and interesting mood lighting, and knowledgeable bartenders, the Distillery stands out among other Detroit bars. There is limited seating due to the small space, but this bar offers a classy yet cozy place to spend your evening.

Pj’s Lager House

1254 Michigan Ave, Detroit, MI 48226

Type: Punk rock music venue and dive bar
Price Range: $
Perfect For: Local music supporters and Jack White groupies

Pj’s Lager House, located in Corktown, is the quintessential local punk rock music venue dive bar. Pj’s features a large stage, pool tables, and cheap drinks and was once Jack White of the White Stripes’ local hang out. Although Jack has moved on, Pj’s is still one of the most fun dive bars and most delicious restaurants in Detroit.
